Naomi Cortes directing GCSE Drama students
Naomi is invited by secondary schools to work alongside teachers and other members of staff in supporting their students through the devising process as they prepare for their GCSE Drama examinations and developing their stagecraft understanding during their A Level years.
She uses her skills as a director to develop the students’ initial ideas and scenes in response to works by playwrights including William Shakespeare, Lorraine Hansberry, J B Priestley, Philip Ridley and Roy Williams. Naomi observes the students whilst they rehearse and identifies what the needs of the group are.
Whilst watching, Naomi may decide that the students’ material needs refining and she will develop the style of the play, exploring movement, language and text. The group may need further support with their understanding of the basic principles of stagecraft and she may concentrate on their stage presence and character transformation. Finally, there may be individuals within the group whose confidence levels need improving and she will engage with these students, encouraging their individual voices. Naomi achieves all of this by encouraging students to trust her skills and take risks within the safe setting she creates.
Naomi Cortes working with GCSE students
"The students loved the experience and really thrived with Naomi's support. Their recent devised work that they created for their GCSE exam was full of ideas that they had gained from Naomi's direction. I was particularly impressed with the way in which Naomi was able to create powerful scenes with a large group of students and the way in which she invested time to get to know the students as individuals in order to win their trust.”
