Ms Naomi teaching poetry at Goose Green Primary
Naomi’s “P is for Poetry” programme has a whole-school impact at Goose Green Primary, where she engages all pupils in Nursery and Key Stages 1 and 2. As an arts specialist teacher, Naomi teaches alongside the school’s Literacy curriculum, encouraging pupils to engage with the power of words.
Through her weekly classes, the children enjoy the performative aspect of poetry, expressing their ideas confidently using voice, gesture and enthusiasm.Naomi uses both classic and contemporary poems from around the world as the framework for her classes, encouraging pupils to speak clearly, convey ideas and develop their vocabulary, while gaining confidence with reading and sharing out loud. The work culminates with an end-of-term poetry assembly, enabling all participants to recite and perform their class poems.

Working together, each class is introduced to a collection of new poems, linked by a theme, style or poet. Pupils begin by exploring their initial feelings about each poem, interpreting the poet’s ideas and incorporating all of this into their own expression of its meaning, making this poem their very own.

This year, Naomi has introduced the LAMDA examinations in Verse to the school, both Introductory and Graded. She identified a total of fifty-seven pupils from Key Stage 1 and 2 who would benefit from participating in this aspect of her programme. The participants all showed a natural aptitude for poetry but would also gain skills in confidence and memoraisation, teamwork and presentation. The exams were a huge success with all pupils gaining the highest marks and being awarded Distinctions!
