"To delight and enlighten children"
Naomi has always loved creating magical stories, from the imaginings of a little girl growing up in a lonely world alongside the Thames Estuary, to the tales she creates today, inspired by the wealth of cultures, languages and colour in the sprawling city of London. Here the children invite her to listen, share and create.
As a child Naomi was always fascinated with colourful characters. Quietly reading alone in her room, in her back garden or in the book corner of her classroom, she would be drawn to 'outsiders'. She would hear their quiet, whispering voices between the pages, asking her to look at them. And she did.
In this way she gained an individual perspective, a very specific way of looking at others. As she developed her output as an artist, working in education and with the local community, she found herself searching for those whispering voices between the pages. And she found lots of them.
From this unique background, she has learned to share in the ideas, concerns and ambitions of our children and young people. She has been able to create a safe environment, where all are welcome in spite of their differences. She feels she has been entrusted with those whispering voices, which help to inspire her writings.
"Theatre Centre is committed to nurturing Naomi Cortes as a writer, as she has a complete understanding of her audience and of the power of theatre to delight and enlighten children. The Littlest Quirky displays originality, ambition and the quest for magic on stage, and in children's imaginations. We applaud and share these values and we hope to enable Naomi, a new writing talent, to bring her stories to young audiences across the country."
